Data pools such as EANnet have been the source of clean and accurate product data for Australian retailers for over 6 years. With the advent of Global Data Synchronisation (GDS), data pools must now comply with a set of global standards called GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network). These standards provide the international framework for exchanging catalogue data between Suppliers and Retailers, irrespective of industry vertical or geography. As such, EANnet will be replaced in April 2008 by a new GDSN compliant data pool called GS1net.

GS1net migration for existing EANnet live suppliers is an essential part of maintaining business continuity. Retailers such as Coles and Metcash rely on their suppliers to seamlessly migrate EANnet product catalogues to GS1net, with a minimum of disruption to daily business transactions. An important aspect of GS1net migration is that suppliers will need to modify their process for managing product master data. Existing systems may need to be upgraded to support the additional functionality of GS1net.
